Demetrios IV

Demetrios IV Coneys and Cheese Fries

Is it in Madisonville?  Fairfax?  Mariemont?  Your guess is as good as ours.  The one thing we’re sure of is that Demetrios IV is one of a rare breed:  an independent eastside chili restaurant.  Located near the beginning of Plainville Rd., Demetrios IV straddles the border between Madisonville and Mariemont in a freestanding structure with a small, convenient parking lot.  Inside the surprisingly roomy restaurant are a plethora of comfortable booths.  The menu features greek items, massive double-deckers, a wide array of entrees and all the chili options you’d expect.

The food was a little better than okay.  The portions were generous.  The prices were a bit high comparable to the competition.  I will note that I was intrigued by other menu items.  No objections for repeat visits.

I’ve eaten at Demetrios a handful of times and have never really been blown away by anything I’d had there so I wasn’t expecting the chili to be anything particularly good.  Luckily, I was wrong.  I ordered up my usual bowl of plain with a cheese coney and from the first bite of chili I knew I was on to something special.  First off, this chili easily packs the most heat of any I’ve sampled thus far.  It’s not unpleasantly hot, but it starts with a slow burn that builds as you eat it.  I know I sucked down more Coke than usual while polishing off the bowl of chili.  The coney was also excellent.  The mustard and onion flavors came through nicely, while the heat from the chili gave the coneys a little more punch than normal.  The buns were soft and sturdy and the cheese was about average.  As an eastsider, I can say with confidence Demetrios will find its way onto my schedule more often.

Demetrios chili had a thick consistency with a fair amount of heat….more than most of the other chilis I have had on the tour so far.  While the spice level was higher, it did not overtake any of the other flavors of the coney.  The chili/cheese/dog ratio was balanced nicely on the fresh bread.  Demetrio’s offers crinkle cut fries, which were cooked ok, but for $4 I expected more out of the cheese fries.
